Here’s a List of 5 #Things2017taughtme in SA Music Industry
5. GQom is here to stay
2017 witnessed the rise of a new sound in South Africa. Last year, In a article reviewing the sound, The Guardian described it as the “foot Stomping new sound of South Africa”. This year we saw the gqom sound make waves not just in South Africa alone but around the African continent and the entire globe, giving birth to new stars in the industry. At Vibesza, we know this is just the beginning, this new sound is taking over and silapha ngalokhu!!! What was your favorite gqom track this year?
4. SA HipHop is best in Africa
In 2017, SA HipHop officially took the crown as the best Hiphop industry in the continent, killing off what was left of the challenge from its closest competition in Nigeria. While many Naija rappers went full commercial, with some of them dancing full time in their videos, SA rappers maintained that venom and lyrical prowess that has seen the SA Hiphop scene grow in strength over the years. Even Nigerian Rap legend M.I Abaga noted this fact in his track “Fix up” where he blasted so called Nigerian rappers for letting the rap game in Africa go to the south. Basically, SA Hiphop was fire all through the year from singles to features to Albums. May the reign be long!!!
3. A Star is Born
Shekhinah Donnell. This girl is simply amazing! Shekhinah was among the Top 32 of MNET’s Season 7 of SA Idols in 2011 and also finished in the Top 6 of MNET’s Season 8 of SA Idols in 2012. She first raised attention this year when she was featured on “Your Eyes” by Black Coffee and she never stopped ever since, stealing the show in Coke Studio Africa’s Global Fusion episode where she performed alongside US artiste, Jason Derulo and Falz from Nigeria. She went on to drop her debut album titled “Rose Gold” on 6th October 2017. Shekhinah has a serenading voice and this unique storytelling ability of a songwriter. We are witnessing a star in the making and we are watching every moment of the legend. Go Girl!!!
2. The Future Is Now
2017 was the year of the young kids in South Africa. Most artists who bossed the SA music industry in 2017 were young people, and they all did very well. Nasty C who turned 20 in February had an amazing year, and topped it by winning four awards at the 16th Metro FM Music Awards including “Best Hiphop Album” with his album “Bad Hair Extensions”. Shekhinah Donnell has had a stellar 2017, she is just 23. A-Reece is only 20 and had a fantastic album this year titled “From Me To You And Only You”. We are proud of them.
